The natural sand dunes of Sunny Beach are located in the southern part of the resort, on the right and the left side of the Hadjiyska river. The dunes are grouped in three main zones. The first one includes the area from the Holiday home of the Council of Ministers to Hotel Burgas. The second is in the area between the Government Residence and Hadjiyska River. The third zone of sand dunes is located in front of the hotels Zefir, Kotva and Oasis. Several years ago, the dunes had an area of 1000 decares. Regrettably, at present onyl half of them have survived due to various processes such as building and afforestation. The natural sand dunes in Sunny Beach are exceptionally rare because of the fact that they are one-of-a-kind in terms of bio diversity. They accumulate part of the limited free humidity around them and preserve it for those plants they actually need it. Here is also located the largest sand dune in Bulgaria. It is not by chance that the sand dunes of Sunny Beach are listed as a natural attraction with the name Sand Dunes, which has a status of exceptional state property. In 1976 and 1984 the dunes are also listed as a protected area and in 1996 are included in Resolution No4 of the Standing Committee of the Berlin Convention under number 16.2. This document states that the sand dunes are threatened with extinction habitat of more than 17 rare and protected species of flora. These species are also included in the Red Book of Bulgaria and three of them are part of the European list of the rare threatened with extinction species in Europe. The sand dunes themselves are also included in the list of protected areas as part of Natura 2000. There are plenty of hotels in Sunny Beach located near the sand dunes.
